Dr. John's gluten free & bread crumb free meatballs

1/30/2015

Many of you have asked for my gluten free and bread crumb free meatball recipe.
Yields about 20-25 meatballs

In a large mixing bowl add the following ingredients:

10 cloves of crushed garlic; why because I like garlic!
1/2 lb. ground pork or loose pork sausage
1/2 lb. ground beef
1 cup of chicharrones (ground in food processor) this is basically pork rinds used in place of bread crumbs My secret is revealed!
2 eggs beaten
1 cup of pecorino romano cheese
1/4 cup of parsley or as I like use fresh cilantro or sofrito This makes the flavor go up on the yummy scale!
1/4 cup ketchup (organic)
pinch of cumin
dash of Braggs amino acid
Ok I did not add salt for a reason. The pork rinds are not that salty so here is what I do.
After your done pan frying the meatballs in olive oil on medium make sure to use Garlic Salt (not powder)
and lightly sprinkle the meatballs when they come out of the pan.
That is the secret.
*You can substitute turkey for a healthy alternative.

I like chili as much as the next person but I also make mine with fresh and different ingredients.
Here is my version of chili with sweet potatoes.
Start with:
olive oil enough to coat bottom of pan
1 red onion chopped
4 carrots chopped
1 large sweet potato
5 clove garlic    * I really use 8-10
4 cups beef broth
1 large can tomato sauce
2 cups diced tomatoes with juice
2 lbs. ground beef
2 bay leaves
1/2 tsp. thyme
3 tsp. salt
3 tsp. ground black pepper
4 table spoons chili powder
1 table spoon crushed red pepper
1 table spoon curry powder (optional)

* a splash red wine is added while garlic, ground beef and onions are cooking.

Sauté garlic, onion and ground beef with salt till brown and soft.
add all other ingredients to pot and bring to boil then simmer till sweet potatoes and carrots are soft about 45 mins.
OR
Crock Pot just sauté garlic, onion, and ground beef then add to crock pot and let cook on low till you get home.
Enjoy

Oh No More Snow

These are best ways to insure that you do not injure your back shoveling snow.
First spray your shovel with PAM and the snow will slide right off.
Make sure to bend your knees when lifting heavy snow.
Avoid bending, twisting and throwing heavy snow, try pushing it off to the side or take smaller scoops.
Lastly I got a good tip from one of my patients, use tube socks on your  windshield wipers when you stand them up to avoid ice build up.
Have a fun snow event and if you need us we can be reached at 856-691-5900 or my cell phone @ 856-498-0864

Does your B Vitamin make you a nervous wreck?

1/23/2015

If you don't like taking B vitamins because they amp you up then here is some good news for you.
Did you know there are two parts to the B vitamin complex. The first is a vasoconstrictor that tightens up the blood vessels and makes your heart beat faster and keeps you up at night.
The second half of Vitamin B is the vasodilator which relaxes and expands blood vessels and increases blood flow to the heart and extremities or relaxes you.
All the vitamin B you buy on the market today has both these combined, so that makes everyone susceptible to a rapid heart beat and anxiety caused by too much Vitamin B vasoconstrictor.
The good news is that there is one superior product which has these two factor separated. The product is Cataplex B (Vasoconstrictor) and Cataplex G (Vasodilator) which are two distinct and separate fractions of Vitamin B.
Standard process understands this problem and we also understand that if you have high blood pressure you tend not to take Vitamin B because it makes you a nervous wreck!
When we interview patients who are Vitamin B deficient we always ask about the cardiac condition and past performance with off the shelf Vitamin B products.
If you or a family member are sluggish, tired, achy and constantly sick give us a call and we can find the right combination for you.

Do you want a great nights sleep

Do you want a great nights sleep? Sure everybody does. There are some things that you may have tried but still have no luck.
Well I like to talk about what's working. Have you ever tried L-Tryptophan? Did it work? Well if it did not then your probably taking it the wrong way.
Tryptophan needs to be taken with a carbohydrate to be processed effectively. When you take Tryptophan you need to drink a glass of apple, orange or cranberry juice for the tryptophan to pass the blood - brain barrier. Usually you would take about 500 mg 1/2 hour before bed and you will have a better nights sleep. Do not take more than that or you will wake up groggy and sluggish.
If you have any allergy or reaction to tryptophan do not take this product and please consult your physician and or pharmacist before taking any nutritional product with your regular medications.

Dr. Johns tip for the day.

Did you ever hear the expression, pissing away your money?

Well my friends this may be true if your buying vitamins that are not from a whole food source.
The big names that you buy as adults and for your children are synthetic and made in a lab not from the whole food source. What are you getting when you take vitamin C, B, D etc? You get a fraction of the complex that is derived from a chemical that resembles the real thing. Let me explain further. Take Vitamin B for example, Vitamin B should come from a protein or vegetable source. When you buy your store bought version of gummies or multi vitamins you get a synthetic B made in a lab from Creosote or a coal tar derivative.  The same product made for preserving railroad ties and telephone poles. You rember that smell don't you?
Taking a vitamin made in a lab in a fractionated form is like saying a watchband or a gear is a watch, but common sense tells you they are just parts and you need all the parts to have a real functioning watch.
So when you take a whole food "Complex" you get all the vitamins known and unknown as nature intended.
Consider how much time and money you waste taking these vitamin supplements that just get eliminated from your body due to the fact they are devoid of any nutritional value or lack bioavailability.
We use Standard Process whole food nutritional products in our office and find them to be the best when it comes to many nutritional deficiencies.

Why Peanuts are so good

1/12/2015

Peanut butter and peanut butter powder are the least expensive and best percentage of high protein.
Did you know peanut butter makes up to 60% of usable protein.  Did you also know that you can add PB to other foods to raise the Amino Acids deficit.
PB is 98% digestible and has 26% linoleic acid that is essential for CHOLESTEROL METABOLISM.

We are a big fan of PB use in our protein shakes and recommend it to our geriatric patients and children without peanut allergies
